Biomechanics and Gait Analysis

Biomechanics is the science of movement of the human body. It is the study of how muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments work together to produce movement. In podiatry this translates to how the legs and feet move loads and pressures that are acting on the body, from the feet all the way up to the hips.

Gait analysis involves your Podiatrist watching you walk to determine if there are any biomechanical factors preventing your optimal movement. Weakened or tight muscles, issues with technique and excessive force can have a detrimental effect on the body. This can cause pain, inflammation, swelling, tears and even fractures to the bones and tissues unable to tolerate the load. At Aevum Podiatry we conduct full biomechanical assessments, including gait analysis, to determine any deficiencies in your lower limb biomechanics and how these can be most effectively treated.

Orthotics

Orthotics are inserts placed into footwear to assist in rehabilitation, management and prevention of lower limb injuries. They are like a sling for the foot. When prescribed correctly, orthotics have been clinically proven to reduce symptoms of pain and discomfort in the lower back, hips, knees, ankles and feet.

Orthotics help by optimising the movement of the lower limb. By redistributing pressures and other forces, the body can function within its optimal range. This reduces the load on the areas of the foot that are injured or at risk of injury. This promotes healing and can relieve, or prevent pain, allowing you to stay on your feet during your busy day.

At Aevum Podiatry, a comprehensive biomechanical assessment is conducted to determine if Orthotics are required, and which form is best for you. If this assessment finds that you would benefit most from fully customised orthotics, an accurate model of your foot is generated using a three-dimensional digital scanner. Your Podiatrist uses this scan to create a customised prescription based on your biomechanics, injury, footwear and lifestyle needs.

While orthotics provide the support, stability, cushioning, and alignment necessary to keep the feet, ankles and lower limb comfortable, they do not act alone. Orthotics are most effective as a tool within a broader management

Does Shockwave Therapy work?

Clinical studies have found that Shockwave Therapy has been successful in eliminating pain in up to 80% of patients with chronic pain where other treatments had failed. Shockwave Therapy can result in the following effects:

  • Stimulation of collagen production
  • Dissolution of calcified fibroblasts

Does the treatment hurt?

Most patients tolerate Shockwave Therapy extremely well and report only minor discomfort during treatment, which ceases as soon as treatment is finished. Treatments typically last 5 – 10 minutes.

How many treatments will I need and how often?

This is dependent on the injury and the individual. The effect of Shockwave Therapy is cumulative so you will likely need more than 1 treatment. Typically, 3 – 5 treatments are recommended, with 3 – 10 days between treatments. This is dependent on the tolerance of the patient and their tissue response.

Are there any restrictions after treatment?

It is recommended that patients refrain from physical activity, especially one that would involve the treated region, for about 48 hours following each treatment session.
